I think the timing works under certain circumstances.
For example, on Pardon the Interruption, when they are trying to get through a lot of topics at once, it can help keep the show moving.
However, I can see your point about it on pre/post-game shows.
As for women's sports, I have no problem covering them, except when it comes at the expense of a men's sport that is more likely to be watched.
