It all depends on what you want out of your car. If you like fixing cars very often, buy a high mileage (170,000+) American car.
Seriously though, if you like keeping most of your hard earned money, I might suggest a low mileage Honda or Toyota.
My first two cars were domestic, and I spent more than $4000 in repairs in a year. My third car is a Toyota. I have spent no money on repairs for this car.
When it comes down to it, Japanese cars just last longer, and hold their value better. That is all.
