Medusa99: I can commiserate although I am coming from the other end of the spectrum.
Except for about 2 yrs. total of my nearly 34, I have had long hair. I mean truly long hair. One of my little pet peeves are models, actresses or women's magizines that think "long" hair is somewhere below the neck and above the shoulder blades. My hair brushes the top of my butt cheeks.
Up until the 1920's with the flapper movement and sufferage, the majority of women had long hair. It was a show of independance and defiance for women to cut off their hair into bob's and other styles. Beyond that time period, I just don't understand why women and girls still embrace the shorter hair style overwhelmingly. The next major women's movement was "women's lib" of the '70's and long hair was unquestionably back during that time.
I personally feel that very few women look good in and can get away with very short hair. The majority wear their hair in short-medium to medium lengths. Like those of you who chose to wear your hair short, I receive quite alot of flack for my long hair. It is healthy, cut nicely (no redneck short hair on the crown and only the back long! It's all one length but no Crystal Gayle goin' on), kept clean and I get compliments left and right from total strangers about how beautiful it is. In South Africa, the bar girls at our hotel couldn't stop caressing and touching it, much to my embarressment.
I just feel women look sexiest and most feminine with longish hair. In theory, many others do to. Think of all the novels (no not harliquins people!)/movies/videos where the woman seems like a prude or is stern, until the pins come out and her long hair cascades down her back. As one who lives with it daily it seems to me that most women have chosen the easist route, which is short/er hair because it is a pain-in-the-ass to take care of long hair. Watch any talk-show episode about make-overs and the stylists can't wait to take their sissors to a woman (or man) with really long hair. My own wedding pictures make me sad/mad because the stylist 2 days before, instead of giving me a trim of 1", hacked off 6" of my hair. When curled for my wedding, I looked like a total stranger with my hair just brushing my shoulders.
My Mother-in-law has made seemingly benign comments for 16 yrs. about my hair and very shocking to me, my Father-in-law (who is a much different creature) recently joined in with the razzing. Like the original poster, I just don't understand people's attitude about long hair.
I'm just expressing my personal opinions and although I prefer long hair on women, I don't detest short hair (it can look great on the right woman), I was just trying to show someone's thoughts from the opposite side. I'm pretty sure not many women with short hair would think that those of us with long hair get attitude too.
