I like using Eclipse to do my java development.
Also, I wouldn't bother too much with visual anything, it's all candy and no trousers. If you are interested in coding, then you should concentrate on the actual code. The visual side of things is just a cheap facade...
If you want to learn visual basic, then a great place to start is in Excel - however, if you can get the full VB from uni for free then go for it.
