Battlestar Galactica flies again
The remake of classic 1970s space yarn Battlestar Galactica is flying again, as Sci-Fi Channel US okays a second, extended season of 20 episodes, once again with UK cabsat channel Sky1 onboard.
Since its debut last October, the drama has been "tremendous success" for Sky1, said the UK network's head of acquisitions, drama and comedy, David Smyth. Likewise, it was "a rating juggernaut," according to the US channel, where it ruled the 25-54 demo for cable networks for five Fridays.
Production on the new episodes is already underway in Vancouver, Canada, bringing the total to 33 hours – longer than the original 1970s version, which ran to just one season. NBC Universal International Television Distribution shops the show outside the UK and the US.
Battlestar Galactica is written and executive produced by Ronald D Moore (Carnivale, Mission Impossible 2) and executive produced by David Eick. Oscar nominees Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell resume their roles in the new season.
Moore, who has been working on six new scripts to resolve the cliffhangers of the first season, said the new season would "delve deeper into the show's religious themes and open up the Cylon world."
