* There is no motive for the old guy to kill three kids if they weren't doing anything.
though most see last year’s murders as a result of a dispute that spun tragically out of control.
It sounds like there was some sort of dispute that was not elaborated on; there was some sort of a motive.
* There is an odd statement that we may never know what the survivor saw when he returned to the scene. Why the hell not?
As with the first question, his observation of the man was probably at quite a distance and under a bit of stress when he figured out what had happened. Dress, stress, and distance probably all contributed.
* The old guy committed suicide with TWO shots to the head. How in the hell can you do that? Did one of the surviving family members exact revenge, or perhaps the mystery shooter described above was tying up loose ends?
It sounds to me like he tried the classic under-the-mouth suicide, and ended up just shooting through the face and mouth. Gunshot wounds can be devastating, but this one was non-fatal at least for the moment and would not have incapacitated him. In quite a bit of pain, it would have been easy to figure out his mistake and correct it.
