My mother was recently in the market for a new laptop, and she really didn't want to spend too much money (she's 58 years old and mostly does email, internet, and makes greeting cards with her computers... oh yeah and some family tree/genealogy stuff).
I looked long and hard at many online and brick&mortar establishments for a nice laptop at a reasonable price. After much deliberation, I came back to my local Sam's Club and purchased the Averatec 6110 (it sounds identical to the one you've listed above).
At first I thought the case was somewhat cheap and flimsy, especially after being the owner of a few mil-spec GRiD laptops back in the day. I currently own an Apple iBook which is fairly solid, and a Titanium PowerBook which is a freakin' rock. But after playing around w/ it for a while I thought "eh, it'll do... too many features to ignore for the price, and the big ass decent quality screen".
My mom has put it to the test, and it seems to be working out very well. No major problems at all and the battery life is OK but not the greatest. I am pretty happy with the purchase and it's price. The DVD burner and everything work great.
I say buy it, but don't drop it and keep it in a well padded case. Given those tips, it should be a nice long lasting laptop. This doesn't apply to everyone, but when I buy a new laptop.. I ALWAYS purchase the extended warranty as I am very very hard on laptops.
