You miss the point of that statement. The BASIC rules of gun safety are like the 10 Commandments:
1. Always assume a gun is loaded. That means things like chamber checking - even if your buddy removed the magazine and showed you an empty chamber prior to handing it to you.... That also means it should be pointed in a safe direction - even when "empty." - Neither of which the poor fella did.
2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to shoot. So even in a "low ready" stance the finger is OFF the trigger.
3. Don't cover (point) at anything you don't intend to shoot. e.g. dark areas... etc.
4. Always be aware of what's behind your target (backstop).
I am impressed that he didn't start to pass out after getting shot - perhaps it wasn't his first time...
