I doubt it was deliberate. It just seems like way too stupid a move to have been staged. What's more, what would have been the point? All it seemed to do was freak out the kids in the room and make them lose focus, not pay more attention.

There's such a thing as a gun without ammo in it, which is what he should've been showing off if he
really thought that he needed to show off a real gun instead of a representation.
And where was dude's safety that he so easily shot himself? I know he works for the DEA, but are we sure he wasn't on something?
