To my knowledge, the Hitatchi Microdrives are hard drives. They are just a very small form factor. The difference between the iPOD Shuffle and the other ipods (as far as the storage medium) is that the iPOD Shuffle is actually a flash drive, and as such it is solid state.
If you wished to use it for working out or something along those lines I would recommend a flash based player since it won't skip while jogging or doing other such activities. However, the price difference between microdrives and solid state flash is quite a bit different, although the prices seem to be falling for flash drives.
