I was there just a year ago. I didn't notice anything else than friendly vibes. I felt exceptionally safe, even touristing around the red light district.
L.A on the other hand. I've been to more than 30 countries around the world and I haven't been in a worse place. I found myself wandering around L.A. Downtown late at night .. didn't feel to safe
. I knew it was stupid, so I got out of there quickly, but none the less it was a cool experience.
