Excellent games, however the current one (Rome) has a pretty weak diplomacy model. While the list of options is pretty extensive (trade rights, alliance, tribute, giving settlements, etc.) the AI doesn't give a shit if you are their allies or not. They WILL attack you, sometimes for no reason at all. I can't count how many times I've been backstabbed. The ONLY reason to recruit diplomats is to get trade rights. But what do you expect, as Coppertop said, it is called Total War, not Total Peace.
