Rlyss, this is a great thread. I'd be interested to hear what Dell has to say (push them to give you more than the layman's answer :-)
I like your theory on the overheating GPU, but you should then be checking the temp. of the GPU to verify it. Might be a general lemon, though, if it's been this way since the beginning.
