I've got lots of sibling rivalry stories between me and my sister, but there were times when we did get along, as hard as it is to remember.
When I was 8 and she was 5 or 6, we lived in a cabin on a mountaintop with no running water and no electricity. Our cabin was actually a converted outhouse, the extra-large type I suppose. It had a big septic pit some distance off to one side where we would go do our peeing and pooping. We'd push the stuff over the edge with a stick afterwards. The odd thing is, I don't remember that pit ever smelling bad or anything - it was very deep. The only problem was, it got reeeeeal dark up there at night, and one or the other of us would always have to go. Well, she was too small to go out there by herself anyway, so I'd have to go along with her and make sure she didn't fall in or get lost or eaten by a cougar or something. It was quite scary creeping out there in the dark, knowing that we wanted to get as close as possible to the edge without getting
too close, if you know what I mean. So what we ended up doing was practising long-distance peeing during the day - we'd have contests. We'd both squat down and pull up our dresses, then lean way back and shoot pee as far as we could! That way, when we went out there at night, we could stay way far back from the edge of the pit and still make it in. I wonder if my mother ever realized how we suffered?
