I've had a similar problem.
I had to uninstall wmp 10. In the add/remove dialogue you can check the box at the top that says 'show updates' and then scroll down, it should be there. I then had to run some sort of registry cleaner to clear out all the shit the uninstaller left behind. Reboot and then re-install WMP 10. That seemed to fix it for me.
Note: I had a WMP entry and an update entry. I got rid of them both.
By the way, I think it is some glitch in the OS as I had the exact same problem with my bit torrent client. I had to uninstall, clean out the registry, reboot and then re-install to get it to finally stop.
