My advice: get a 22 LR for them to practice on with iron sights until they're proficient at 25 and 50 yards... once they are, have em prove it to you, and as a reward, do the .17.
Or... you could also try out the new .17 mach 2... which would only require a rebarreling on the 77/22 or rebarreling with an action/spring kit on the 10/22... it's a viable option, anyway. The .17hm2 is a 22lr case necked down to .17, and has a pretty high muzzle velocity... .17 hmr would still be *better* at 100 yds, but with hm2 you could have a pretty versatile gun.....
*edit* added info: the 17 hm2, once properly installed via action kit on a 10/22, is actually a pretty nice choice. There are a few people that can get .5 inch groups at 100 yards with em...
