That setting only applies to
future threads. You need to find all of the old threads that you are subscribed to, and individually unsubscribe from them. Go to the User Control Panel, and there's a link to "View Subscribed Threads".
You can also individually subscribe to a single thread, without having the 'thread subscription status' set to on.
