If you don't have an immediate desire to dive into it, wait until April when Hoary is released. It's supposed to smooth out a bunch of things, and I heard that a graphical installer might make an appearance (not that it's
really necessary.

). Or you could try a preview CD. Array 5 came out last week, I think.
EDIT: Also, Hoary will use x.org instead of Xfree86 if that makes a difference to you.
EDIT2: Hoary preview release 1 is out today.
