My roommate my freshman year in college in Fall '92 had A Picture of Nectar on tape and that really got me into them. They'd played on some dates of the Horde tour in summer of '92 (right after I graduated from HS) which also featured Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, Col. Bruce Hampton and Aquarium Rescue Unit, and the Spin Doctors (amongst others), but I don't think they played on the southeast dates and weren't really well known down in Georgia at that time. I started really getting into those bands (and a lot of others like The Connells, Allgood, and others who were mainly known on the college circuit) that Fall. One of Phish's most legendary concerts was in Feb. '93 at the Roxy in Atlanta. I considered driving down from Athens to check them out but didn't for some reason. Still kicking myself for that one.
Started going to shows throughout college and for a little while after I graduated and traded tapes throughout and eventually switched to CDs when CD trading became commonplace, but in the past 5 years, I think they've really gone downhill. I think part of it could be attributed to my being a bit older (31 in July this year) and my music tastes have changed a bit, but I think they also have become very sloppy and are often going through the motions. Judging by all the shows I have seen/heard on tape/CD, I think their best years were 92-97.
