From what I've heard, taking that dose of sleeping pills will result in things like you imagining a friend just walked into your room and engaged you in conversation, seeing spiders running all over the walls, and other such weirdness. Apparently unlike most other hallucinogens, you can't really differentiate those hallucinations from reality either.
Also, I've taken a couple Benadryls (same stuff, just in a lower dose) a few times to get to sleep and it sometimes makes me have sleep paralysis, which is when you wake up and can't move for 30 seconds or so. Which is scary as hell at first, but it's happened to me enough now that I just think "ah crap, this again.. ok, can't move... can't move... can't move... ooh I wiggled my toes... can't move... ok cool I can move!" and go back to sleep.
