I don't know for sure that it was a surveyors line that the Mason-Dixon was made. If it was, it wasn't a North-South divider. Many say it was the North-South divider; but that wasn't really a line that could be drawn. Originally, the line started between Maryland and Pennsylvania, going west.
N-S divider lines ran more between the states: VA vs WVA; TN/KN vs OH. I have family members that argued it out in MO and IL(Union v. Confed.), living in-state. And then you have the western states, or territories, that really didn't want any part of it.
