I hope this isn't too tangental to the topic, but would applying aftershave make a difference at all ?

[In the few years that I have shaved, I've never used it..]

As for the grain, I go both against and with the grain. Seems as if both ways were best in getting all of the hair for me, but I'll try your suggestions next time.
