Random bit with IDV Inc. Two friends of mine are currently interning there (they're headquartered here in Columbia, SC), so they get to play around with stuff over there, including that SpeedTree program. IDV apparently works solely on rendering stuff like trees and other vegetation as realisticly as possible (they hire/intern computer art design students from USC as well to do the visuals) but with as much speed as possible. Seems that coding vegetation to look real is extremely taxing.
