System shock and system shock 2 were the first games where I've been completely terrified. The SOUNDS in system shock 2 are incredible. The first time you see a mutated robot woman walking around muttering to herself 'babies need meat', the way SHODAN announces herself, the zombie-annalids that beg for forgiveness and to be killed while they pummel you. The fact that the volume LEAPS to four times the size the moment a battle occurs. It took me three times to complete it because I'd just reach a point and stop playing out of kindness to my nerves.
I once tried to get a friend to play it. She didn't even complete the first level and had nightmares about psychic monkeys and screaming half-humans for a week.
Also, Alien VS Predator as a marine - HOLY CRAP. The motion detector beeps are the most hormone-pumping thing I've ever experienced in a game. Even as the beeping gets closer and closer and you turn the corner and the alien leaps at you you're still not ready. You suddenly leap out the chair and say SWEET FUCKING CHRIST and try to fire and run away all at the same time. Crazy.
Well worth playing it on a fast computer. Things move at about twice the speed as they would on a normal fps, and aliens move twice the speed again.
Silent hill - I haven't played enough to rate it. The bits that I've done weren't that scary, but a lot of my friends are completely freaked out by it. Maybe I'll give it a try.
