Songs...and the personal context
Most of us have a song, or songs, that have a special meaning to us. Not necessarily special in the romantic sense.
One song that I often listen to when I'm feeling like shit is Peter Gabriel's "We Do What We're Told". I'd encourage you to download it and listen, but does anyone ever really do that based merely on someone's suggestion?
The first time I heard this song was when they kept playing it over and over on Miami Vice during the Burnett trilogy episodes. This is important to my point because Miami Vice was a show with such a strong focus on the audiovisual design, one of the reasons I found the show so compelling.
This makes me wonder if I indeed would have found Gabriel's song to be as angst-filled as I do if I hadn't first heard it in the background of those relatively anxious episodes. (If you don't give two shits about Miami Vice, then this point may be moot to you, but for those that remember the show and especially those three episodes, it may make sense...)
My question to you is, are there songs that are particularly important to you, that may be important not just because of how well they are written, but because of the context in which you first heard them, perhaps giving them the extra flavour that they have?
