This is good advice. I worked on a contract basis as a technical writer for a number of years. This is what I found: hiring for permanent positions involved having exactly the right set of qualifications and experience. But with contractors, "close enough is good enough." As a result, I got to do a lot of jobs I'd never have been hired to do on a permanent basis, because I lacked the right track record. Contracting allowed me to _build_ a track record.
