A quick search suggests sk98lin is the name of the module used for your gig card. Is that included on the LiveCD (modprobe -l | grep sk98lin)? If it is, what does a "modprobe sk98lin" tell you? if it says nothing, then you should be able to use the gig card (ifconfig eth0 up)....
Are you running the minimal LiveCD or the full one? I'm not sure if the full LiveCD has more modules or anything.. but it may.
