I, myself, will not be falling apart after a year, two years, even ten years.
For HP, however, their warranties protect your laptop if there is any defective component (battery, memory, hard drive) and also from accidental damage (broken screen, keyboard damaged, etc.). HP has very good warranties for their computers (Compaq, of course, included) as well as the notebook replacement plan.
