I think the reason the ads in the US say -- "Ask your doctor if XYZ is good for you" without even telling you what it is or what it does -- has to do with advertising regulations. I don't think pharmaceutical companies are allowed to make claims about what their pill can do.
In fact, I don't think they were allowed to advertise at all until very recently.
I know they can't run those types of ads in Canada.
