Well, he certainly hit on a lot of the things that I think are wrong here and did it in a very entertaining way, maybe a little too much like preaching but that's OK for a song.
The part about prescription drugs is so true. The commercials will sometimes say "Ask your doctor if XYZ is good for you" without even telling you what it is or what it does. I can imagine thousands of folks making doctor appointments and asking for a drug they have no idea about except the commercial showed a picture of some flowers or something.
I think that the analogy of using the angry nerd to explain Bill Gates success is probably a stretch though. Would he say the same about Jobs and Wozniak?
It would be interesting to hear him take the opposite approach and tell us what is good about our country. Something like:
"They say we’re in the middle of an obesity epidemic."
"But we defy the pundits and are living longer than ever."
or Byron MacGregor's song "The Americans" from 1974
Quote:
Let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design
foreign buildings that wont shake apart in earthquakes.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were
breaking down through age, it was the Americans who
rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the
New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an
old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you five
thousand times when the Americans raced to the help
of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one
time when some one else raced to the Americans in
trouble. I dont think there was outside help even during
the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have
faced it alone and Im one Canadian whos damned tired of
hearing them kicked around.
They will come out of this thing with their flag high and
when they do they are entitled to thumb their nose at
the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I
hope Canada is not one of these but there are many
smug self-righteous Canadians.The Americans
