It really depends on what the roots of the teeth are liked. A friend of mine had a really long recovery from wisdom teeth extraction because the roots of the teeth curled up like fishhooks; the dentist had to do a _lot_ of cutting to get the teeth out of there. On the other hand, this should show up on X-rays in advance, and a dentist who's being straight with you should be able to warn you. My friend's dentist put him on Percodan for a few days after the procedure, which is pretty extreme but which did a lot to ease his pain.
