As a labor & delivery nurse, my wife had no question as to getting the epidural. Her thinking: The epidural was invented for a reason! Why suffer through the pain when there is something out there to help? She was induced at 6:30 a.m., got the epidural at 3:30 p.m. and our son was born at 9:51 p.m.
My advice (yes, from a male), don't wait too long to ask for a refill on your epidural. My wife's wore off and she waited too long before asking for more. She was fully dilated so they wouldn't give her more. They were afraid that she wouldn't push well enough to get him out. So, the epidural got her up to the delivery point but she faced the pain through the toughest part. I couldn't have been that bad though. She is ready for another kid!
If you want to ask some questions or get some info, send me an e-mail or PM. I'll give you her e-mail address.
