One of our econemies was going to eventually collapse under the trmemdous stress of military buildup and the space programs and such. In a hypothetical situation where Russia's econemy didn't fail, America's econemy would have probably reached a breaking point at which it could no longer supprot the competition with Russia. When this breaking point could have been is anyone's guess, but it was a win/lose cold war.
