Methinks the same thing.....
Pretty sure that hot factory race 911's went under the RS tag from that era. S/Carrera models were the hot street car. Keep in mind though, 1000 of anything for Porsche was a huge quantity in 1968 (1969 model year). Factory prepped race versions were built in low, homologation quanitities which are nowhere near 1000.
Best bet would be registering at
www.pca.org and ask the forums rather than speculate. A few years back in New England, someone found a barn stored, 1949 Gmund Porsche stored which may have been one of the first ~5 in the US so you just never know what you might find. Like anything, knowledge is key when buying an old, maybe rare, maybe high value, car.
