Don't get too distraught over not having a good enough computer. Bethesda is using SpeedTree to generate their grass/trees.

Download the SpeedTree demo (http://www.idvinc.com/html/pangaea_downloads.htm). I think you'll be surprised at what your computer can handle...
There should be more demos on the website. This is the most recent and spectactular however.
