As far as I'm aware, the steroids in beef and chicken story is true. The onset of menstruation/puberty for women is going down with some girls as young as 5 yrs starting to have periods. (The 5 yr olds may only be statistical aberrations; I have only heard 2nd or 3rd hand accounts of this, not true studies.)
I find the earlier onset of puberty ironic given our later onset of marriage, especially as compared to 18th and 19th century.
