This is true provided your heart rate is at the right level - you won't burn the same calories if you dawdle. In fact, you can burn more calories in a certain mid-range heart rate over the same distance than you will in a high range. Been a while since I read up on this, so can't recall the ideal heart rate for fat burning, but it's at a rate that you would expect to have at a fast walking pace rather than running.
