I was always under the impression that the US had an enormous gun crime/fatality issue until I saw the stats for 2001 mortalities for the US.
Out of the 70,000 odd deaths from firearms, about 65- 70% of those were suicides. And most of those were in the 45-65 age group.
It didn't list assaults not resulting in deaths, but death is always the big siren for the media.
In the same year, the stats show that medical related deaths (operating table and misdiagnosis, drug reactions) exceeded gun related deaths.
Ban doctors.
