Yes, film is very affected by the x-rays they scan your luggage with. Its a wierd occurance because it doesn't always happen. What it can do is leave red bands through the negatives ruining most/all of the frames. I'm a professional photographer and I always carry all my film as a carry on. The scanners get really pissed at me and give me shit but I make them hand scan it. If this is something important to you add in at least 20 min to your departure time. They will run a special rag over the film canister and tube and then process the piece of cloth for contaminates. This may be time consuming but your film will stay in tact and you have total control over who touches your documented memories : )
