I think that if someone works hard enough, has the dedication, has a lot of patience, AND has a good attitude, then they can pretty much do anything they want in the realm of knowledge. I think an art history buff can definitely become a particle physicist if that person has all of the the above. I agree, but I think you have touched on the key. I think a knack allows you to have the dedication, patience and I will add desire to learn something or develop a talent. Could I learn to be a math wizard? Maybe. But, because that is not where my interest lie I am not likely to devote the effort necessary to achieve in that area. Whereas I will spend ten times the effort learning and working at something that does interest me.
