I'd say it depends on if you know where you want to look for a job.
If you have a specific area in mind, first ask anyone you know in that area if they know of any jobs. If you don't have any leads there, I've found that the best way to get a job is to look up companies in the yellow pages, especially ones in the industry you want to get work in. This worked for me when I needed a job, and my wife also (she got a job at a law firm this way). I find the Yellow pages way works because you will find a lot of places that know they need to hire someone but haven't put the effort to put in an ad anywhere. And all of the ad places have 100s of people applying so it lessens your chances.
If you don't care where you want to work, I would check with everyone you know again, and also checking the big job search boards like monster.com, yahoo! jobs, etc. Also find the local paper and check their online version, they usually include the classifieds which include job postings.
