Yes, traffic can be a huge stressor. I've found making that extra effort substantially helps my own patience. A sort of "random act of kindness." In congested traffic you can often see politeness passed on by the recipient. Just don't push it too far or the effect on those behind you will make up for any gains.
Not everyone can be a good driver, and certainly not all of the time. We'll never legislate traffic reform for our current system. We're underfunded and too dependent on the current system for transportation and revenue. Instead we'll bounce between destinations while enforcement and cost pick off the statistical sore thumbs. (Consider who that's likely to be.) It'll remain this way until automation or mass transit removes ego and other individual shortcomings from the roadways. In the meantime I'll keep practicing my deep breathing exercises.
