The Obvious (already stated here):
Beatles: duh
Led Zeppelin: duh again.
Queen: genius that sold well and made people happy. Not hard or inaccessible. Just beautiful, polished, invigorating rock music.
The Sorely Missing:
Paul Simon/ Simon and Garfunkel: genius stuff here, and I can't imagine the history of music without it. Graceland is possibly one of the greatest pieces of work ever put together.
Wilco: one of the most consistently genius bands going today. Check out Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. After about ten listens, you won't regret you did.
