The top of my list would have to be Halo and the GTA series. I haven't played Halo 2 yet, so I can't comment, but I just don't get the interest in these games. I'll try to be brief.
Halo:
It looks pretty, I'll give it that, and the concept is delightfully cool, though doesn't play out quite as well as I would've liked. But the gameplay was utterly blah. I hated going backwards and forwards through so many of the levels. I HATED the Flood. WORST ENEMIES EVER. Especially in the harder difficulty levels, they just were a huge pain in the ass and not at all fun or interesting to fight. I've played through Half Life three or four times and love it every time. Same with Deus Ex and Max Payne. There are just moments in those games that put a huge smile on my face. I never get that with Halo. I understand that much of its draw was multiplayer, but I had a lot more fun in UT and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I guess (as someone else said) I'm just a PC gamer when it comes to FPS. The console FPS games I play just don't do it for me. I'll drive or sport or RPG, but give me a mouse and a keyboard for FPS and I'll be a much happier person.
GTA:
What the fuck is it with these games? I've played all of them and spent hours watching other people play them. I DON'T GET IT! Sure, you can drive around in a huge, immersive world and do all kinds of random shit, but I just cannot see what people find so enjoyable about them. I have a friend who kills basically everyone he can get away with every time. He'll go into a store, kill everyone, go outside, come back in, kill everyone again. He will repeat this for hours at a time, which a shit-eating grin plastered across his face the whole time. How is that fun? From the other people I've seen play, this seems to be pretty typical behavior. Just mind blowing. I can't really give a coherent justification for why I don't really like these games, they just rub me the wrong way.
On a final FF related note, I quite enjoyed 9, X and X-2 (though I'm not finished with X-2 quite yet), but damn do they need to cut the bullshit with getting people's "last weapons." Beating the games, especially the optional side dungeons, gets to be hard as hell if you don't have the 9999 damage break to 99999, but getting the items to do that is awful. The hours I spent dodging lightning bolts, digging with chocabos, dodging birds and getting balloons while riding chocabos are ones I can never have back. In fact, that's really what's stopping me from playing FFX again. I'd love to do it, but I'd want to have those items, and lacking a console from which I can just cheat them in, no way I'll be doing that. Tedium is BAD and should not be a deliberate part of game design.
