I usually go to the northern part of Germany, just fly into Frankfurt and go north by train. I would reccommend that you take an IC train from Frankfurt to Köln. That train ride goes along the Rhein river. Then once in Köln, there is a very famous cathedral not too far from the train station.
If you're going to spend a good amount of time in Germany, then I would suggest, Berlin. Berlin is a great city and there are many things there to occupy your time.
