I'd pick largely based on what kinds of games you like to play. If FPS is your genre, get an xbox. Halo/Halo 2 and a slew of others. If you like RPGs or platformers, get a PS2. The FF games, Xenosaga, the Jak and Dexter trilogy, Rachet and Clank series, the list goes on and on.
I can't stand to play FPS on a console, so I reserve that for computer time and I like RPGs, so I bought a PS2 when I made the same decision about a month ago. The new PS2s are pretty fucking hot, too. Hope that helps.
