I did the tirerack.com thing a couple months ago and bought a set of Kumho tires for my car. The price worked out well even after paying a local shop $100 to put them on.
The thing is, you can research the hell out of your choices at tirerack, get exactly what you want and have it shipped to any number of places that are happy to install them for you. The whole thing took less than a week.
