Oh for sure. But use a puppet? Well, I have a pretty good track record of just saying "Hi, what's your name". You don't need a puppet, which you have pointed out. Like I said, if I walked up to a complete stranger and put a puppet on her shoulder followed by me saying something corney, and she busted out laughing... well for some reason the attraction would start to wain for me.
