Totally agree. Taboo? I think that might even be the wrong word. Unusual perhaps, but then so is hanging out in TFP!
Anyway, I've shaved my pits, used Neet on my pits, and even (yow!) waxed my pits, and it is a pretty cool thing to do. In fact, for a halloween costume one year, I removed all hair below my neck entriely. Amazing, and I'd do it again in a second. If you haven't tried it, you should.
