Gatorade (along with the other sports drinks out there) really does help to rehydrate yourself faster than plain water. That said, most people that drink enough water during the day (most of us don't) really have no need for Gatorade vs. water.
I do triathlons... Gatorade is definitely indispensible for me on the long events and long workouts. This is both because of the hydrating action as well as the additional fuel (calories).
If you're drinking the Gatorade for the fuel, it does help to add a small amount of protein mix to it. Having protein present increases the uptake speed of carbohydrates. It may help with absorption of the liquid too, but I'm not positive on that.
